SPACE QUEST I: THE SARIEN ENCOUNTER

WALKTHROUGH (EGA)

This walkthrough was written by Frodo

for Janitor In Space

THE ARCADA

​

You begin your adventures in the Arcada StarShip, having been woken

from your nap due to a VERY loud alarm.  Who set that alarm off?  SO

inconsiderate - you were really enjoying your nap!  

​

You step out of your hiding place in the closet… only to find chaos

around you.  The alarm screams out that the Arcada has been boarded

by unknown invaders.  And all your crew mates are dead!  You have to

find a way to escape, before YOU are killed as well.  

​

Now this first section is timed, so you only have a certain amount of

time (15 minutes) to escape, before the Auto Destruct destroys the

ship.  

​

Walk left 3 times, to the dead-end.  SEARCH MAN, and TAKE KEY-

CARD.  Now walk back right twice, so you are in the library.  Wait here

for a few moments, and soon, one of the ship’s scientists will stumble

in.  He’s mortally wounded, and falls to the floor.  Walk over to him, and

LOOK MAN. He struggles up on one elbow to tell you that the Arcada is

under attack, and that the Star Generator is in danger.  With his dying

breath, he utters the words Astral Body’.  Poor scientist.  

​

Walk over to the computer console (which is really a Data Retrieval

System), and LOOK SCREEN.  Type in ASTRAL BODY, and the Retrieval

System obediently fetches it for you.  Don’t forget to TAKE

CARTRIDGE.  

​

Head right twice, and take the lift down to the lower floor.  Go right

twice, again, and take the lift down to the floor below.  If you hear the

Sariens coming, hide on the left side of the lift.  Now walk right, to a

room with 3 flashing lights in the floor.  Walk over to the window, and

LOOK WINDOW to see the Vehicle Bay.  Walk to the Control Panel

along the window, and LOOK PANEL.  There are 2 buttons here, so

PUSH OPEN BAY DOOR BUTTON - you see the bay door open below

you.  

​

Go right again, walk over to panel next to the lift, and LOOK PANEL.

You see the display light is not currently on.  INSERT KEYCARD, then

LOOK PANEL again - the display light is on.  Take lift down to the next

level.  

​

You’ve reached the Airlock Control Room.  Go over to the two cupboards

on the back wall.  PUSH LEFT BUTTON, and TAKE GADGET.  EXAMINE

GADGET to see that it’s a Dialect Translator.  Hmmm, this could be

useful.  TURN GADGET ON - you can now understand any language.

PUSH RIGHT BUTTON and TAKE SPACE SUIT - you automatically

change into the space suit, and hang up your janitor’s uniform.  Walk

over to the Control Panel, and LOOK CONTROL PANEL.  PUSH AIR-

LOCK, and a door on the left opens.  Walk through this door.  

​

This is the airlock itself.  You have your space suit on, the bay doors are

open, and you’re all ready to escape.  There’s just one problem - where’s

the escape pod?  

​

Walk to Control Panel at the bottom left, and LOOK CONTROL PANEL

to see a button marked ‘Platform’.  PUSH BUTTON.  Ahhh, there it is!

You’ve raised the platform, and can now see the escape pod.  Walk to

the left side of the escape pod, and ENTER POD.  

​

You are now inside the escape pod.  CLOSE DOOR, and FASTEN SEAT-

BELT.  Now LOOK BUTTONS to see 3 buttons in front of you.  PUSH

POWER button and PUSH AUTONAV button.  Now, notice the lever in

front of you - PULL LEVER.  

​

Congratulations, you escaped from The Arcada.  The fun is only just beginning!  

​

​

 


ESCAPE POD

​

You’re safely in the escape pod, travelling through the cosmos.  SAVE

YOUR GAME HERE.  For a bit of fun, PULL DON’T TOUCH button -

you’re treated to an easter egg for King’s Quest 1 (heehee).  

​

Ahem!  Restore your game, and let’s try that again.  

​

You’re safely in the escape pod, travelling through the cosmos.  You’ve

already turned on the AutoNav (or at least, you should have), so just sit

back and relax for a while.  

​

When the monitor flashes, it tells you that it’s heading for the planet

Kerona.  All you can do, is wait for it to land.  

​

​

​


PLANET KERONA DESERT

​

The escape pod crash-lands on the planet Kerona.  You can see

immediately that this is a desert-like planet - extremely hot!   SAVE

YOUR GAME HERE.  

​

LOOK POD to see the survival kit, and then TAKE KIT.  EXAMINE KIT to

see that it contains a KNIFE, and some DEHYDRATED WATER.

EXAMINE KNIFE, EXAMINE WATER, and READ LABEL on the water

can.  Apparently you just need to add air to the dehydrated water, and

voila!  

​

Okay, let’s leave the pod, and explore our new surroundings.  UN-

FASTEN SEATBELT, then LEAVE POD.  Walk to front of ship, and LOOK

GROUND to see some reflective glass from your wind-screen.  TAKE

GLASS, then SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  

​

Remember, this is a desert planet.  Whenever you get thirsty, just

DRINK WATER.  

 

Start walking right - soon you’ll see a spider droid landing from the sky

(eek!).  Spider droids are designed to destroy all organic life forms.  In

other words, it wants to kill you!  You have to kill it first.  

​

Continue right until you see a ledge going up - walk onto the ledge.  The

spider can’t get you here, but it still follows you from below.  Follow the

ledge up and left, so you are on the bridge.  Beware, that bridge

becomes more unstable each time you walk over it - you can only walk

over it 3 times in total, before it collapses.  Now there is a ROCK here.  

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  

​

Walk over to the rock, and when the spider droid is underneath,  PUSH

ROCK - if you timed it correctly, the rock falls onto the spider droid,

crushing it dead.  Phew!  If you missed the spider droid, simply Restore

your game and try again.  

​

Follow path round until you see a broken arch.  Walk through the arch -

oh, you found a secret platform taking you to a hidden underground

cave.  

​

​

​


UNDERGROUND CAVE

​

What an interesting cave.  Notice the ROCK next to the lift, so GET

ROCK.  Walk left one screen, and SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  For a bit of

fun, walk over the grate in the floor.  Wasn’t that nice of you, to fed the

tentacled beast?  Hehe.  Okay, Restore your game, and try again.  Walk

left to the next screen, and walk up to the grate.  Now hug the far wall,

and shimmy along the edge of the grate, so the beast can’t reach you.

Phew, you’ve passed the grate.  But now what?  There doesn’t seem to

be a way out.  Patience, my little friend.  Notice that geyser spewing

steam there?  PUT ROCK IN STEAM, and a door opens.  Walk up into

the next screen.  

​

Another interesting cave.  Find your way to the exit at the top left, and

carry on to the next screen.  

​

Wow, there’s a laser barrier here.  Now, I hope you picked up that

REFLECTIVE GLASS from your escape pod, when you crash landed.

Walk up to the laser barrier, and PLACE GLASS IN BEAM to reflect the

lasers in on themselves, and fry the circuits.  Follow path up to the next

screen.  

​

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Notice those marks on the floor?  You need

to be wary of them - acid from above is dripping down, and landing on

the floor here.  Time the drips carefully, and run past the acid, between

drips.  You may want to Save between each drip.  Now continue right

twice, so you are in a dark room.

​

The only thing you can see in this dark room, is a huge holographic 

image looming above you.  It tasks you with destroying the Orat beast,

and bringing back evidence that it’s dead.  Note that if you haven’t

picked up the TRANSLATER GADGET from the Arcada, or haven’t

turned the TRANSLATOR GADGET on, then you won’t be able to under-

stand the hologram.  Anyway, the hologram sends you back to the

surface to complete your mission.

PLANET KERONA DESERT

​

Follow the ledge down & right (beware of that bridge), until you are

back at ground level.  If you haven’t dealt with the spider droid it will still

be lurking.  Also remember to DRINK WATER when you get thirsty.  

​

From base of the ledge, walk up one screen.  There is a cave on your

right - this is the Orat’s cave.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  

​

Type THROW WATER (remember warnings on the water container

about not puncturing it), but don’t press Enter yet.  Walk right into the

cave.  The Orat will immediately come for you.  Now press Enter to

throw the water.  The Orat will catch the water container, swallow it,

and explodes, heehee.  The Orat is dead!  Now walk over to the right

side of the cave, and GET ORAT PART.  This is proof that the Orat is

really dead.  Walk left to leave the cave, then down one screen.  

​

Climb up onto ledge again, and follow it all the way to the broken arch-

way.  Walk through then archway, and take the life down to the

underground cave.

​

​

 


UNDERGROUND CAVE

​

Follow the steps you did before, until you reach the dark room with the

giant hologram.  

​

DROP ORAT PART in front of the hologram.  You have proven your-

self worthy, so walk forward through the doorway.  

​

Wow, you didn’t expect this.  You finally get a ‘Welcome To Kerona’.

LOOK ROOM and then LOOK CONSOLE.  That console seems very

similar to the console back on Arcada.  Walk over to the console, and

INSERT CARTRIDGE.  Read the info about the Star Generator, and

remember the passcode 6858.  Remember to TAKE CARTRIDGE from

the console again.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Now GET ON SKIMMER,

and TURN KEY to turn it on.  The skimmer takes you back up to the

desert surface.

SKIMMER ARCADE SEQUENCE

​

Turn your speed right down to SLOW.  Now follows an annoying arcade sequence that you can‘t skip.  You have travel over the desert, avoiding rocks, until you reach Ulence Flats.  You can only get hit 5 times before you die, so be careful!  I recommend Saving your progress every so

often.

ULENCE FLATS

​

Finally, you make it to Ulence Flats.  As soon as you arrive here, put your

speed back to how you like it, then TAKE KEY from your skimmer (so

no-one can steal it) and LEAVE SKIMMER.  A man will approach you,

wanting to buy your skimmer - tell him NO.  Wait a few moments for

the man to return.  He’ll offer you a new deal that includes a JETPACK.  

This time, tell him YES (you’re gonna need that jetpack later on).  

​

Now enter that bar on the right.  Fantastic live band on stage.  If you

leave, then enter again, you might see a different band.  Anyway, go

over to the bar, and BUY BEER from the bartender.  DRINK BEER.  

Tastes yuk, but you need a drink after recent events.  Now again, BUY

BEER, and DRINK BEER.  For a third time, BUY BEER and DRINK BEER.

You should now overhear some aliens talking about the Deltaur enemy

ship in Sector HH.  That’s where you need to go next.  You just need to

buy a ship to get there.  And to buy a ship, you need money.  

​

Walk over to Slot Machine on the right, and SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  

Now this Slot Machine is the only way to get money… if you win.  But it’s

random, so it could take a while.  Press F8 to place your bets.  If you win,

SAVE your progress.  If you lose, or if you get zapped, simply Restore

your game.  Repeat this process until you have one $250 buckazoids, at

which point, the Slot Machine will malfunction.  You can’t do anything

else here, so leave the bar.  

​

From outside the bar, walk up and right, to Droids B Us.  Enter the shop,

and follow sales assistant up the stairs to the ‘Sale’ droids.  Walk over

to the white droid, and BUY DROID.  Now leave the shop - the droid will follow you.  

​

Walk down, and then left twice, to Tiny’s Used Spacecraft.  Tiny will try

and sell you various ships, but don’t buy them.  Now walk up one

screen, to the scrambler ship.  Tiny will give you his best sales pitch -

this time, BUY SHIP.  When Tiny leaves, ENTER SHIP.  Now LOOK

CONTROL PANEL, and PUSH LOAD BUTTON to load your droid on

board.  The droid (who will be flying the ship) asks what sector you wish

to go to, so tell him HH (you overheard this in the bar).  As you are

taking off, the REAL owner of the ship turns up… Tiny sold you someone

else’s ship, hehe.  

​

Watch the cutscene, as your droid flies through the asteroid field, to the

Sarien ship Deltaur.  

​

​

 


THE DELTAUR SHIP

​

WEAR JETPACK, LEAVE SHIP, and float over to the middle of the door. OPEN DOOR, then walk forward into the airlock.  There’s no going back

now.  

​

Try, unsuccessfully, to OPEN DOOR in front of you.  Damn, it won’t

open.  Wait a few moments, and when the droid comes in, walk up

through the airlock door.  

​

You now find yourself in a mainly-empty room.  Walk over to the trunk

on the left, OPEN TRUNK, and GET IN TRUNK.  Wait a few moments,

and the Sariens will take the trunk (and you) into the laundry room.  

OPEN TRUNK, and SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Walk over to the

washing machine.  OPEN DOOR, and CLIMB IN WASHING MACHINE to

hide.  Now a Sarien will enter the room, and turn on the washing

machine.  Don’t worry, you survive the experience.  When the rinse cycle

is over, OPEN DOOR to get out of the washing machine.  Wow, some-

how, you find yourself in a Sarien battle uniform.  What a brilliant

disguise!  LOOK UNIFORM to find an ID CARD for Butstom Freem.  

​

Wearing your new disguise, walk right to the next room with 2 lifts.  If

you want, you can TALK GUARD to hear some amusing comments.  

Now take the left lift down to the floor below, and head left.  Take this

lift to the upper level, and head right three times, past the Star

Generator, so you are in the Armoury.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.   Walk

over to the counter, and SHOW ID CARD to the droid.  While he is gone,

quickly GET GRENADE from bottom edge of the counter.  The droid

returns, and gives you a pulse ray unit.  

​

Walk left, so you are above the Star Generator, and SAVE YOUR GAME

HERE.  When the guard is below you, THROW GRENADE to knock him

out.  Walk back right, into the Armoury, and SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  

As before, SHOW ID CARD to the droid.  While he is gone, GET

GRENADE from bottom edge of the counter.  The droid returns, but

this time doesn’t give you anything, since you already have your

weapon.  

​

Go left 3 times, so you are back at the lift.  But UH-OH… you tripped…

and your helmet fell off.  Now the Sariens can see you’re not one of

them, so you need to be careful.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  

​

Take the lift down to the lower level, and make your way right to the

Star Generator.  Press F6 to shoot any Sariens you come across.  

​

In the Star Generator room, SEARCH GUARD to find a REMOTE

CONTROL device.  PUSH BUTTON on the REMOTE CONTROL to turn

off the force field.  Walk up to the Star Generator and LOOK CONTROL

PANEL, and enter the passcode 6858.  Remember to push the Enter

key.  

​

Now you have 5 minutes to get out of here, before the whole ship

explodes.  Walk left, take the lift down, so you are back in the room

with 2 lifts.  Take lift on the right, to find yourself in a new area, with an

escape pod.  Walk over to the ship, ENTER SHIP and PUSH BUTTON to

escape.  

​

YOU DID IT!  You blew up the Star Generator, and stopped the Sariens

from carrying out their evil plans.  

​

Congratulations!  You have saved the galaxy!  You’re a hero!

​

​
