SPACE QUEST I: THE SARIEN ENCOUNTER

WALKTHROUGH (VGA)

This walkthrough was written by Frodo

THE ARCADA

​

You begin your adventures in the Arcada StarShip, having been woken

from your nap due to a VERY loud alarm.  Who set that alarm off?  SO

inconsiderate - you were really enjoying your nap!  

​

You step out of your hiding place in the closet… only to find chaos

around you.  The alarm screams out that the Arcada has been boarded

by unknown invaders.  And all your crew mates are dead!  You have to

find a way to escape, before YOU are killed as well.  

​

Now this first section is timed, so you only have a certain amount of

time (15 minutes) to escape, before the Auto Destruct destroys the

ship.  

​

Walk left 3 times, to the dead-end.  Search Jerry’s body, and take the

KEYCARD.  Now walk back right twice, so you are in the library.  Wait

here for a few moments, and soon, one of the ship’s scientists will

stumble in.  He’s mortally wounded, and falls to the floor.  Walk over to

him, and talk to him. He struggles up on one elbow to tell you that the

Arcada is under attack, and that the Star Generator is in danger.  With

his dying breath, he utters some words, which is really a code.  The code

changes with each play through, so pay attention to what he says.

Interact with the Data Archive Unit so you are sitting down, then use

the machine’s monitor to get a close-up of it.  This is where the Copy

Protection comes in.  A small blue Touch-pad pops up, with various

symbols on it.  Remember the words that the scientist told you, and

refer to your Arcada Planetary Reference sheet to know which four

symbols to use.  The Retrieval System droid obediently fetches it for

you, so when he holds it out to you, take the CARTRIDGE.  

​

Head right twice, and take the lift down to the lower floor.  Go right,to

where Dave and Blanche’s bodies are, and go up into the next room (not

the lift).  

​

You’re now in the Star Generator Development Lab.  Take MAGNET

from the destroyed pedestal, then leave the room.  

​

Go right twice, and take the lift down to the floor below.  If you hear the

Sariens coming, remember to hide.  Now walk right twice to a room

with a window and a control panel.  Look at the 2 orange buttons in the

control panel to get a close-up, and see that they control the bay doors.

Press the OPEN BAY DOOR button.  Now try to take the lift down to

the floor below, only to discover that this lift needs a KEYCARD.  No

problem - use the KEYCARD you found on Jerry earlier on, with the

keycard slot next to the lift, then take the lift down to the floor below.  

​

You’ve reached the Airlock Control Rom.  There’s a cupboard along the

wall here.  Open cupboard, and take the SPACESUIT - you automatically

change into the SPACESUIT and hang up your janitor‘s uniform. 

There’s also a drawer to the left of the cupboard - open the drawer, and

take the GADGET.  Open your inventory, look at the GADGET, and turn

the GADGET on.  Now walk over to door on the right, and push the

button to open the door and go through to the next room.

This is the airlock itself.  The escape pod is right in front of you, so enter

it.  

​

ESCAPE POD

​

You are now inside the escape pod.  Remember to fasten your SEAT-

BELT on the right.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Now look at those 3

buttons in front of you (at eye level).  The buttons are:  AutoNav (left),

Don’t Push (middle), and Power (right).  Push the Power button to turn

the power on, then use the Throttle joystick in front of you.  When you

have cleared the Arcada, look at those 3 buttons again, and push

AutoNav (left) button.  The AutoNav will take you to the nearest

inhabitable planet, which is Kerona.  

​

Phew, you escaped from the Arcada.  The fun is only just beginning!

 

 

 

 


PLANET KERONA DESERT

​

The escape pod crash-lands on the planet Kerona.  You can see 

immediately that this is a desert-like planet - extremely hot!  SAVE

YOUR GAME HERE.  

​

Okay, let’s leave the pod, and explore our new surroundings.  Unfasten

your seatbelt - you automatically climb out of the escape pod.  You can

see something peeking out of the cockpit you just climbed out from, so

take the SURVIVAL KIT from the cockpit.  Go to your Inventory, and

open the SURVIVAL KIT to see it contains an ARMY KNIFE and a

canister of DEHYDRATED WATER.  Look at the DEHYDRATED WATER

to see the warning label.  Close your Inventory window again.  

​

Notice there is something on the ground in front of the escape pod - go

and pick it up.  It’s a piece of REFLECTIVE GLASS.  Now SAVE YOUR

GAME HERE.  There is a Grell lurking in the desert sand, and if you hang

around for too long, the Grell will eat you.  

​

Remember, this is a desert planet.  Whenever you get thirsty, just drink

your WATER.  

​

Walk right, and then down.  Take one of the purple STICKY PLANTS.  

Wow, is that sticky!  Now go down again, and right twice, so you see

the beginnings of a giant skeletal backbone emerging from the sand.  

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Start to walk up the spine, and follow it

round.  As you do so, you should see something hurtling towards the

sand (if not, walk back & forth until you see it).  It’s a spider droid (eek!).

Spider droids are designed to destroy all organic life forms.  In other

words, it wants to kill you!  You have to kill it first.  Luckily, it can’t get to

you while you are on the skeletal spine.  

​

Stay on the spine, and follow it left, until it forms a bridge, and you see

a cracked disc, but DON’T walk onto the cracked disc yet - it becomes

more unstable each time you walk on it, and you can only cross over it 3

times in total before it breaks.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Look at the rib

bones, and notice there is one BROKEN RIB BONE towards the front.

Wait for the spider droid to walk underneath, and then push the

BROKEN RIB BONE - if you timed it correctly, the BONE falls onto the

spider droid, crushing it dead.  Phew!  If you missed the spider droid,

simply Restore your game and try again.  

​

Continue along the spine until you see a sign on a spike.  Walk up to

the sign, so you can read it.  Uh-oh, you found a secret lift taking you to

a hidden underground cave.  

​

​

UNDERGROUND CAVE

​

What an interesting cave.  Take the STALEGMITE ROCK TIP from the

‘repaired’ rock near the lift.  Walk left one screen, and SAVE YOUR

GAME HERE.  For a bit of fun, walk over the grate on the left.  Wasn’t

that nice of you to fed the tentacled beast?  Hehe.  Okay, Restore your

game, and try again.  Walk close to the grate (but not on it), so the

tentacled beast pops up.  Now throw the STICKY PLANT to the

tentacled beast - it’s tentacles grab it, and stick themselves together,

thus it’s unable to grab you.  Simply walk left into the next screen now.  

​

You’ve reached a door with no apparent way to open it.  Ahh, but

appearances can be deceptive!  Notice that geyser spewing steam

there?  Put the STALEGMITE ROCK TIP in there to plug it up, and the

door opens.  Now SAVE YOUR GAME HERE. 

​

Notice that green pool?  For a bit of fun, take a drink from it (use the

Tongue icon at top of the screen).  Oops!  Okay, Restore your game.

This time, ignore the acid pool, and walk left to the laser barrier.  

​

Now, I hope you picked up that REFLECTIVE GLASS from your escape

pod, when you crash landed.   Walk up to the laser barrier, and use the

REFLECTIVE GLASS in the beam to reflect the lasers in on themselves,

and fry the circuits.  Nice work.  Now follow path up to the next screen.  

​

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Notice the acid drops, dripping on the floor?

You need to be wary of.  Time the drips carefully, and run past the acid,

between drips.  You may want to Save between each drip.  Now

continue right twice, so you are in a dark room.

​

The only thing you can see in this dark room, is a huge holographic

image looming above you.  It tasks you with destroying the Orat beast,

and bringing back evidence that it’s dead.  Note that if you haven’t

picked up the TRANSLATER GADGET from the Arcada, or haven’t

turned the TRANSLATOR GADGET on, then you won’t be able to

understand the hologram.  Anyway, the hologram sends you back to the

surface to complete your mission.

PLANET KERONA DESERT

​

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  If you haven’t dealt with the spider droid yet,

it will still be lurking around, wanting to kill you.  

​

Okay, you need to kill the Orat.  Walk right, down, right, and up, so you

see a giant skull.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Take one last drink of

WATER, then walk into mouth of the skull, to discover that this is the

Orat’s cave.  And the Orat is here.  And he looks awfully hungry!  Quickly

throw your WATER canister to the Orat - he catches it with his mouth,

and swallows it whole… and then explodes.  By puncturing the canister,

he created 10 gallons of water all at once (remember the warning

label).  Now walk over, and take the ORAT PART, so you have proof that

he‘s dead.  Now leave the cave.  

​

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Head down to the spinal bone, climb onto it,

and follow it along to the end, then take the lift down to the under-

ground cave.  

​

​

 


UNDERGROUND CAVE

​

Work your way through the cave, Saving at the acid drops, until you

reach the dark cave again.  Give ORAT PART to the giant hologram.  You

have proven yourself worthy, so walk forward through the doorway.  

​

Wow, you didn’t expect this.  You finally get a ‘Welcome To Kerona’.

When the man has finished talking to you, look around the room.  Look

at the computer on the wall, and insert CARTRIDGE (from the Arcada)

into the computer.  Read the info about the Star Generator, and take

note of the passcode you see here - it changes with every play through,

so you need to pay attention.  Make sure you get the CARTRIDGE back

from the computer.  Now look at the skimmer, and SAVE YOUR GAME

HERE.  Climb into the skimmer, which will take you to your next

destination.

SKIMMER ARCADE SEQUENCE

​

This section is an arcade sequence, which you can choose to skip if you

wish.  If you decide to play it, you have travel over the desert, avoiding

rocks, until you reach Ulence Flats.  You can only get hit 5 times before

you die, so be careful!  I recommend Saving your progress every so

often.  

​

ULENCE FLATS

​

Finally, you make it to Ulence Flats.  As soon as you arrive here, a man

will approach you, wanting to buy your skimmer - tell him NO WAY.

When he’s gone, take the SKIMMER KEY from the skimmer.  Wait a

few moments for the man to return.  He’ll offer you a new deal that

includes a JETPACK.  This time, tell him IT’S A DEAL (you’re gonna need

that jetpack later on).  He also gives you some COUPONS, before driving

off in your skimmer.  

​

Enter Rocket Bar on the right.  Fantastic live band on stage.  If you

leave, then enter again, you might see a different band.  Anyway, go

over to the bar, and talk to the bartender.  Buy a BEER, and then drink

the BEER.  Tastes better than it smells.  Now again, talk to the bar-

tender and buy a BEER, and then drink the BEER.  That hit the spot!  For

a third time, talk to the bartender, buy a BEER, and drink the BEER.  

You should now overhear an alien talking about his encounter with the

Sarien ship Deltaur.  Take note of which Sector this happened in - it

changes with every play through, so you need to pay attention. 

Whatever Sector it was, that’s where you need to go next.  You just

need to buy a ship to get there.  And to buy a ship, you need money.  

​

Stand up and walk over to Slot Machine on the right (notice who‘s

currently playing the Slot Machine!).  Now when the Slot Machine is

free, SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  This Slot Machine is the only way to get

money… if you win.  Now to make sure you win, use MAGNET on the

Slot Machine (it’s not really cheating… honest).  Insert 3 BUCKAZOIDS

on the Slot Machine, then press the button to start gambling.  Since

you’ve stuck the MAGNET on side of the machine, you’ll win.  Keep

playing, inserting 3 BUCKAZOIDS at a time, until you win 315

BUCKAZOIDS, at which point, the Slot Machine will over-heat.  You

can’t do anything else here, so leave the bar.  

​

From outside the Rocket Bar, walk up and right, to the Droids B Us

entrance and enter the building.  The sales assistant will give you his

best sales pitch, and give him your DROIDS-B-US COUPON to get 20%

off the sale price.  Wait until you see the Nav-201 model showing on

the display screen, then give him some BUCKAZOIDS.  You’ve now

bought yourself a droid.  You automatically leave the shop, and collect

your DROID from the Pick Up point.  

​

Walk left, and down to Tiny’s Used Spaceships.  Tiny will try and sell

you various ships, but don’t buy them.  Now walk up one screen (Tiny

will follow you), and walk over to the Drallion Cruiser (the ship with the

ladder).  Give BUCKAZOIDS to Tiny, to buy the cruiser.  Now climb up

into your new ship - the Nav droid will load himself automatically.  As

you are taking off, the REAL owner of the ship turns up… Tiny sold you

someone else’s ship, hehe.  Note that mysterious ship that appears

after you’ve gone!  

​

Now, in the cockpit of your new ship, the Nav-droid will ask where you

want to go.  I hope you took a note of the Sector you over-heard in the

Rocket Bar - enter code for that Sector in the Touch Pad.  Watch the c

Cutscene, as your droid flies through the asteroid field, to the Sarien

ship Deltaur.

THE DELTAUR BATTLE CRUISER

 

Now you’ve reached the Sarien ship, your poor little droid gets scared

and wants to leave.  Tell him NO.  The Nav-droid drops you off, and

beats a hasty exit.  Float over to that handle on the left, and pull it.  The

airlock door opens, and you automatically fly in.  The door closes behind

you.  There’s no going back now.  

 

Now, SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Try to open the door in front of you, but

you will be unsuccessful.  Hide on right-side of the door, and wait a few

moments for the droid to appear.  Sneak past him, through the open

door, into the storage room.  

 

Walk over to the trunk centre of the room.  Push trunk over to the air

shaft.  Use your ARMY KNIFE to open the shaft, then crawl into the

air ducts.  Now crawl forward, and make your way up to the next level.

In the next section, climb up one level, and exit through vent on the

right - use the Hand icon to push it open.  

 

You should be in the Laundry Room now.  Open the giant washing

machine, and climb in it to hide.  A Sarien will enter the room, take his

uniform off, throw it in the washing machine, turn the machine on, and

then leave.  Only problem is… YOU’RE also in the washing machine!  

Luckily, you survive the experience.  And when the wash cycle is over,

you emerge wearing a Sarien Officer Uniform.  What a brilliant stroke of

luck!  Unfortunately, you’ve lost most of your possessions.  Now search

through pile of clothes on the floor to find an ID CARD for Butstom

Freem.  

 

Wearing your new disguise, walk right to the next room with 2 lifts.

Now take the left lift down to the floor below, and head left.  Take this

lift to the upper level, and head right three times, past the Star

Generator, so you are in the Armoury.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.   Notice

those gas grenades behind the counter?  Walk over to the counter, and

show ID CARD to the droid.  While he is gone, quickly lift up the

counter, take a GAS GRENADE from the shelf, walk back in front of

the counter, and lower the counter back down.  The droid returns, and

gives you a pulse ray unit.  

 

Walk left, so you are above the Star Generator, and SAVE YOUR GAME

HERE.  While the guard is below you, drop GRENADE on him to knock

him out.  Walk back right, into the Armoury, and SAVE YOUR GAME

HERE.  As before, show ID CARD to the droid.  While he is gone, lift

up the counter, take the second GAS GRENADE from the shelf,

walk back to the front of the counter, and lower the counter back down.

The droid returns, but this time doesn’t give you anything, since you

already have your weapon (love his sarcasm, hehe).  

 

Go left 3 times, so you are back at the lift.  But UH-OH… you tripped…

and your helmet fell off.  Now the Sariens can see you’re not one of

them, so you need to be careful.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  

 

Have your PULSE RAY ready, take the lift down to the lower level, and

make your way right to the Star Generator.  Use the PULSE RAY on

any Sariens you come across.  

 

In the Star Generator room, search the guard to find a REMOTE

CONTROL device.  Now use REMOTE CONTROL on the Star

Generator force field to turn it off.  Walk up to the Star Generator and

use control panel at the base of it.  Enter the passcode you found on

the cartridge earlier.   

 

Now you have 5 minutes to get out of here, before the whole ship

explodes.  Walk left, take the lift down, so you are back in the room

with 2 lifts.  Take lift on the right, to find yourself in a new area, with an

escape pod.  Walk over to the escape pod, and climb into the escape

pod.  

 

YOU DID IT!  You blew up the Star Generator, and stopped the Sariens

from carrying out their evil plans.  

 

Congratulations!  You have saved the galaxy!  You’re a hero!
