QUEST FOR GLORY I

SO YOU WANT TO BE A HERO

SCI WALKTHROUGH - THIEF (PART 1)

This walkthrough was written by Frodo for The Hero's Glory

SPIELBERG TOWN

Welcome to Spielburg.

Well, you came here to prove yourself a hero, so let’s get started.

After the Sherriff greets you, tell him your name.  Now, it would be

good to know a little bit more about this town, so you know what

you’re up against, as you try to become a hero.  So ASK ABOUT

SHERIFF, ASK ABOUT SPIELBURG, ASK ABOUT HERO, ASK ABOUT

BARON, ASK ABOUT WOLFGANG, ASK ABOUT GUILD HALL, ASK

ABOUT MONSTERS, ASK ABOUT BRIGANDS, ASK ABOUT

MERCHANT, ASK ABOUT TREASURE.

Now you are a thief, so it’s important for you to be able to get in and

out of places undetected.  As soon as you can, start SNEAKing

around.  If at any time the game takes you into a normal walk, make

sure to enter SNEAK mode again.

Notice the Hero’s Tale Inn.  That looks like a good place to get

information, so enter it.  Shameen, owner of the Hero’s Tale Inn,

greets you warmly.  ASK ABOUT INN, ASK ABOUT SHAMEEN, ASK

ABOUT SHEMA, ASK ABOUT HOMELAND, ASK ABOUT ABDULLA,

ASK ABOUT ROBBERY, ASK ABOUT FATE, ASK ABOUT BRIGANDS,

ASK ABOUT WEALTH, ASK ABOUT CARAVAN, ASK ABOUT TOWN,

ASK ABOUT KATTA, ASK ABOUT GUILD HALL, ASK ABOUT MAGIC,

ASK ABOUT MONSTERS, Phew, that was a lot of information!

Anyway, it’s been a long walk to Spielburg, and you’re feeling hungry.

Sneak over to the table, and SIT down.  Shema will come out from

the kitchen to greet you, so say HELLO to her.  Now ORDER FOOD,

and when Shema returns, EAT the food.  That tasted good!  When

you’re ready, STAND up and leave the Inn.

After talking to the sheriff, and Shameen, you know that the Guild

Hall is to the left, so let’s pay it a visit.  Sneak left to the next screen.

Enter the Guild Hall on the left.  What an interesting place.  Notice

that desk against the back wall - READ LOG BOOK, SIGN LOG BOOK,

and READ LOG BOOK again.  Now go over to the Quest Board and

LOOK BOARD to see 6 posters hanging up.  Click on each poster to

read details about each quest.  Looks like you’ve got your work cut

out for you, if you want to become a hero.  Now exit the close-up.

Notice the Guild Master, Wolfgang, fast asleep in his chair.  Sneak

over to him, and TALK MAN.  Now that he’s woken up, ASK ABOUT

WOLFGANG, ASK ABOUT GUILD HALL, ASK ABOUT BARONET, ASK

ABOUT TROLL, ASK ABOUT ADVENTURER, ASK ABOUT HERO, ASK

ABOUT CURSE, ASK ABOUT MONSTERS, ASK ABOUT BRIGANDS,

ASK ABOUT ANTWERPS, ASK ABOUT BABA YAGA, ASK ABOUT

DAUGHTER, ASK ABOUT YORICK, ASK ABOUT PURPLE SAURUS,

ASK ABOUT GRYPHON, ASK ABOUT DRAGON, ASK ABOUT

CHEETAUR, ASK ABOUT MOOSE.  That’s all the information

Wolfgang can give you, so leave the Guild Hall.

Enter the Magic Shop (it has a big eye above it).  Sneak up to the

counter, and the shop owner, Zara, will appear.  ASK ABOUT ZARA,

ASK ABOUT SPIELBURG, ASK ABOUT AURA, ASK ABOUT ERANA,

ASK ABOUT MAGIC, ASK ABOUT BARON, ASK ABOUT TOWN, ASK

ABOUT BABA YAGA.  Since you’re not a magic user, you don’t need to

know much about magic, so leave the Magic Shop.

Head right twice, to the Farmer’s Mart.  Hilde, the Centaur, runs the

Farmer’s Mart stall, so BUY APPLES from her.  Repeat this 5 times,

so you have 50 apples (you‘ll thank me later).  Now talk to Hilde, and

ASK ABOUT CENTAURS, ASK ABOUT FATHER, ASK ABOUT

BRIGANDS.

The Dry Goods shop is next to Hilde, so enter it.  The shop keeper is

busy reading a book, and doesn’t notice you come in, so TALK MAN

to get his attention.  BUY FLASK from him, and repeat this 3 times,

so you have 3 flasks.  Since you’re here, LOOK ARMOR.  You can’t

afford it yet, but you can come back for it later.  When you’re ready,

leave the shop.

Sneak left to Tavern Street.  Enter the alley to see Sam begging on

the street.  GIVE SILVER to him, and then you can question him, so

ASK ABOUT NIGHT, ASK ABOUT BRIGANDS.  When you’ve finished

talking, leave the alley.  Sam will give you a parting warning not to

drink the Dragon’s Breath in the Tavern.

Enter the Tavern.  Notice that white thing on the floor, near the stool.

GET NOTE to learn some information about 2 people with the initial

‘B’.  Now DROP NOTE, to replace it where you found it, and avoid

suspicion.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Now order some drinks from

the bar if you like (including the Dragon’s Breath, hee hee!), and

DRINK them.  When you’re ready, Restore your game, and leave the

Inn.

Check the time, and when it’s evening (sneak around town for a

while, if it‘s still the afternoon), return to the Hero’s Tale Inn.  Abdulla

Doo is here, and he is very upset about the Brigands robbing him.

Sneak over to the table and SIT down.  When Shema appears, ORDER

FOOD, then EAT food when she returns.  Now talk to Abdulla, and

ASK ABOUT ABDULLA, ASK ABOUT BRIGANDS, ASK ABOUT

SHEMA, ASK ABOUT SHAMEEN.  Poor Abdulla has had a hard time

recently, so show him some sympathy - GIVE MONEY and GIVE

RATION to him.  You can’t do anything else for him, so STAND, and

then leave the inn.

Remember, you are a thief, and the night-time is when you shine.  It’s

also the best time to practice your lock picking skills without being

seen.  SNEAK around the town, until it gets dark.

OLD LADY'S HOUSE

When it’s dark, head left to the old lady’s house, which is next to the

Magic Shop.  The old lady was sitting here in her rocking chair earlier,

but she’s gone to bed now.  Perfect!  Walk up to the old lady's house,

and PICK LOCK.  Repeat this until you manage to break into her

house.  As soon as you enter, SAVE YOUR GAME.  There is a cat

wandering around here, so PET CAT.  Be careful not to act

aggressively to the cat, or he will alert the owner.  SEARCH DESK on

the left, SEARCH COUCH to get some coins, OPEN PURSE on the

couch to get some more coins, SEARCH BASKET for the string of

pearls, and TAKE SILVER CANDLESTICKS on the coffee table.  This

is a good haul!  Now leave the house.

SHERIFF'S HOUSE

Walk right twice, to the Sheriff's House.  His house is in a different

place to the Sheriff's Office - it is the pink door next to Farmer's Mart.

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Now PICK LOCK, and you should hope-

fully be able to break in.  Keep trying, until you can get inside.  Once

inside, SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  TAKE CANDELABRA from the

roll-top desk, and TAKE SILVER from in the desk.  For some fun,

OPEN MUSIC BOX on the table.  You can only do this once though -

if you try to do it again, the sheriff will catch you.  Now TAKE MUSIC

BOX.  A nice house like this is bound to have a hidden safe some-

where - you just have to find it.  Notice that vase on the fireplace.

TAKE VASE to get to the painting behind.  MOVE PAINTING, PICK

SAFE, and TAKE BAG OF SILVER inside.  CLOSE SAFE, and REPLACE

PAINTING to hide your tracks.  Now leave the Sheriff's house.

SPIELBURG TOWN

What an exciting day!  There’s nothing like the adrenaline rush of

sneaking around in someone’s house when they don’t even know

you’re there!

It’s very late now, and you are tired.  SNEAK, back to the Hero’s Tale

Inn, and enter the inn.  Sneak over to Shameen, and PAY ROOM.  You

automatically enter room at the back left of the Inn.

If you have taken too long in the old lady’s house and the sheriff’s

house, the Hero's Tale Inn might be locked up for the night.  If this is

the case, you will have to SLEEP next to the town gates, which is not

as good, since you will not be as well rested, and you will loose some

of your money.

The next morning, SNEAK back into the Hero’s Tale Inn if you slept

outside.  Now sneak over to the table, SIT down, and ORDER FOOD.

When Shema brings your breakfast, EAT the food.  You’re ready for

another day’s adventuring, so STAND, and leave the Inn.

Sneak down through the town gates.  If Bruno is here, SHOW THIEF

SIGN - he’ll recognise you as a fellow thief.  Now GIVE SILVER, and

GIVE SILVER again, then ASK ABOUT BABA YAGA, ASK ABOUT

CASTLE, ASK ABOUT GOBLINS.  But don’t worry if he’s not here.

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.

SPIELBERG FOREST

Those apples are really weighing you down - maybe you should do

something about that!

If you meet any enemies outside the town, simply RUN away - you’re

not ready to deal with them yet.  Now sneak right, and continue right,

until you reach the avalanche.  Then turn around, and head back to

town (but don’t go through the town gates).  Sneak back and forth

between town and the avalanche.  Eventually, you will see a fox

trapped in a snare.  FREE FOX - he’ll thank you, and give you some

good advice.  Now sneak up one screen, and head right, until you

meet Brauggi.  He’s hungry, so GIVE FRUIT to Brauggi (aren’t you

glad you bought all those apples now?), and he will give you a

glowing gem in return.

Now let’s head back to town.  Sneak left once, down once, and left

twice, so you are back at the town gates.

HEALER’S RING QUEST

Sneak up once, to the Healer’s Hut.  Now if you read the Quest Board,

you know that the Healer has lost her ring.  KNOCK DOOR, and the

Healer will let you in.  What a quaint little house.  ASK ABOUT RING,

ASK ABOUT POTIONS, ASK ABOUT COMPONENTS (remember the

components she‘s looking for).  Leave her hut.

LOOK NEST up in the tree, and LOOK BIRD.  Hmmm, I wonder if that

bird stole the Healer’s ring, and hid it up there?  SAVE YOUR GAME

HERE.  Now CLIMB TREE, and repeat this until you successfully

manage to climb the tree, but remember to REST every so often so

you don’t tire yourself out.  Now LOOK NEST and GET RING.  You

automatically climb back down.

KNOCK DOOR again, and the Healer will let you in.  GIVE RING to the

Healer, and she will reward you with 6 gold pieces and 2 healing

potions.  You automatically leave the hut.

THE CASTLE

Sneak up once, to the castle gates.  Karl, the Gate Keeper is patrolling

above the gate - ASK ABOUT CASTLE, ASK ABOUT BARON, ASK

ABOUT BARNARD, ASK ABOUT ELSA, ASK ABOUT YORICK, ASK

ABOUT BABA YAGA, ASK ABOUT CURSE.  Now ask him to OPEN

GATE.  Head up through the gate, and enter the castle grounds.

Inside the courtyard, the Weapons Master might be here.  Since

you’re not a fighter, you don’t have to worry about him.

Sneak right to the stables.  The stable hand will ask if you’re looking

for work, so tell him YES.  He’ll set you to work, raking up the

stables.  It’s hard work, but you’ll get 5 silvers for your troubles.

Now sneak left to the castle courtyard, then sneak down to leave the

castle grounds.

SPIELBERG FOREST

Sneak down once to the Healer’s Hut, then sneak left once to meet

Heinrich the Centaur.  You already met his daughter, Hilde, in the

town.  Approach him, and ASK ABOUT CENTAUR, ASK ABOUT

HEINRICH, ASK ABOUT HILDE, ASK ABOUT FARM, ASK ABOUT

BRIGANDS, ASK ABOUT LEADER.  Hmm, it seems that there’s more

to the brigand leader than meets the eye!  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.

Check the time, and practise SNEAKing, or CLIMB TREE next to the

Healer’s Hut, until evening.  When evening comes, return to the town.

SPIELBERG TOWN

It is night time again - the time you like best!  Continue SNEAKing

around, until it‘s dark.

Now you have all this stolen loot, but what are you going to do with

it?  If only there was a Thieves' Guild somewhere around.

Make your way back to the tavern, but don‘t enter it.  There’s a

strange flashing light coming from the alley.  SAVE YOUR GAME

HERE, then enter the alley to see something flashing at the far end.

Walk towards the flash, and 2 thieves will jump out at you.  MAKE

THIEF SIGN - they will tell you to give the password to Crusher in

the Tavern.  The password is randomly generated, and changes for

each game, so pay careful attention and take note of it.  Leave the

alley, and enter the Tavern.  MAKE THIEF SIGN to Crusher, and type

the password given to you  by the thieves.  He will let you into the

Thieves' Guild.

THIEVES’ GUILD

You’ve earned your way into the secret Thieves’ Guild.  Well done,

you.  The Chief Thief isn’t very happy though, and he’s busy

complaining about ‘beginner’ thieves.  He also tells you that in order

to work in this town, you need a Thieves License, which costs 25

silvers.  You should have enough money, so walk over to Boris at back

of the room, and PAY FOR LICENSE.

You are now the proud owner of a Thieves Guild License, thus you

now have permission to sell your stolen goods.  SELL PEARLS, SELL

SILVER CANDLESTICKS, SELL CANDELABRA, SELL MUSIC BOX,

and SELL VASE.  If you have enough money, BUY THIEF TOOL KIT.

Now CLIMB LADDER to leave the Thieves Guild, and then leave the

tavern.

SPIELBERG TOWN

It's getting late, and you are very tired.  Make your way back to the

Hero’s Tale Inn, and enter the inn.  Sneak over to Shameen, and PAY

ROOM.  You automatically enter room at the back left of the Inn.

The next morning, SNEAK over to the table, SIT down, and ORDER

FOOD.  When Shema brings your breakfast, EAT the food.  You’re

ready for another day’s adventuring, so STAND, leave the Inn, and

leave the town.

SPIELBERG FOREST

Let’s explore some more.  From outside the Town Gates, sneak right

once, up 3 times, and right twice.

ERASMUS

You’ve reached Mount Zauberburg, which is where the eccentric

Erasmus lives.  Head up the mountain path, taking note of all the

amusing signs that appear.  Did I mention, Erasmus is rather eccentric?

When you reach his purple castle at top of the mountain, you’ll see a

gargoyle sitting above the castle, guarding it.  He will ask you 3

questions, so make sure you answer them correctly.  If you’ve been

paying attention to what the townspeople have told you, you should

know the answers.  The possible questions are:

WHAT IS YOUR NAME:                                     Enter your name
WHAT IS YOUR QUEST:                                    Hero
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE COLOUR:        Purple
WHOSE SPELL PROTECTS THE TOWN:      Erana
WHOM DO YOU SEEK:                                       Erasmus
WHAT IS THE BARON’S FIRST NAME:         Stefan
THIEF’S PASSWORD:                                          I Don’t Know

Now enter the castle, and do as the gargoyle says - go straight up-stairs to the tower, and don’t touch anything.

SIT down to talk to Erasmus, and Fenrus the rat.  ASK ABOUT

ERASMUS, ASK ABOUT FENRUS, ASK ABOUT ERANA, ASK ABOUT

BABA YAGA, ASK ABOUT ZARA, ASK ABOUT WARLOCK, ASK

ABOUR BRIGAND, ASK ABOUT ELSA, ASK ABOUT HENRY, ASK

ABOUT CURSE, ASK ABOUT COUNTERCURSE

When you’ve had enough of Erasmus’s jokes, simply STAND, and he

will send you back to bottom of the mountain.

SPIELBERG FOREST

Sneak left twice, up once, left twice, up once, right once, and up

once.  You‘ve now reached Erana‘s Peace.

ERANA’S PEACE

Erana’s Peace is a magical place that has mystical healing properties.

This is the best place to SLEEP at night from now on, as you will be

fully healed by the next morning.  You can also EAT FRUIT from the

tree every day to satisfy your hunger.  Now GET FLOWERS for the

Healer (2 or 3 should be enough for now - you can come back and get

more later).  Now, as beautiful as this place is, you can’t stay here

forever.  You have quests to solve!  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.

SPIELBURG FOREST

SNEAK down, left, down, and left, until you see some unusual

flowers.

SPITTING FLOWERS

These strange flowers are known as Spitting Flowers.  Watch as they

spit their seed to each other.  A seed like that must be highly sought

after - if only you could get it.

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE, and then CLIMB ROCK up to the Spitting

Flowers.  Keep trying, until you successfully manage to climb up the

rock.  Now CATCH SEED, and you’ll eventually get the seed.  When

you’re ready, CLIMB DOWN again.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.

GOBLIN CAMP

Now as a thief, you need to know how to defend yourself.  A good

place to do this, is in the Goblin Camp.  Let’s head there now.

From the Spitting Seeds, go down 3 times, and left twice, to the

Goblin Camp.  This is not a nice place to be!  Check your stats, and if

your health is low, DRINK HEALING POTION, and SAVE YOUR GAME

HERE.

Now you won’t be able to do much at first, so take things slowly.  Let

one of the goblins approach you, and FIGHT him.  Use the Arrow keys

to move your sword, and the Up Arrow key to attack.  To begin with,

just fight one goblin.  After you have defeated him, SEARCH BODY to

get any goodies he was carrying.  Keep an eye on your health and

stamina, and when it gets too low, RUN right one screen, and REST

for 10 minutes.  Keep RESTing until you’re too impatient to rest

anymore.  Then return left to the goblin camp.

Remember, you can always RUN mid-fight, if your health or stamina

are getting too low.  Also remember to SEARCH BODY of the goblins

that you kill, and when you have enough money, you can buy some

more Healing Potions from the Healer.

When evening comes, make your way up to Erana’s Peace (right 3

times to the Centaur, Up 4 screens to the top, right once, and up

once).  The next morning, EAT FRUIT from the tree, and then return

here to the camp, to train more.

Keep practising, and fighting the goblins until you can comfortably

defeat at least 7 goblins, and your Weapon use is at least 70.

Remember to keep an eye on your health and stamina, and SAVE

often.  This will take you several days.

MUSHROOM RING

From the Goblin Camp, sneak down twice, to the Mushroom Ring.

The Mushroom Ring is a very magical place.  TAKE MUSHROOMS (2

or 3 should be enough for now).

SPIELBURG TOWN

As a thief, you also need excellent throwing skills.

In order to have throwing skills, you need to buy some daggers.

Sneak back to the town, and enter the Dry Goods shop.  BUY

DAGGER from Kasper - about 3 or 4 should do for now.  Now leave

the Dry Goods Shop, and leave town.

ARCHERY RANGE

So you have the daggers now… but you still need to build up your

throwing skills.

From outside the town gates, sneak down twice, left once, and up

once to the archery range.

THROW DAGGER at the target, and repeat until all your daggers are

used, then GET DAGGER to retrieve them.  Keep practising THROW

DAGGER and GET DAGGER until your Throwing skill is at least 85.

Remember to keep an eye on your health and stamina, and REST

when you need to.

THIEVES’ GUILD

Now your throwing skills are at a decent level, head back to Spielburg

Town.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.

Enter the tavern in town, and say the password (hope you took a note

of it) to Crusher to enter the Thieves' Guild.  You can PLAY GAME to

play Dag-Nab-It with the Chief Thief for some extra money.  It is kind

of like darts, except you use daggers instead of darts.  The aim is to

throw a dagger at the centre of the target.  You can adjust your

angle with Left and Right arrow keys, and you can adjust the force

used with Up and Down arrow keys.  You can bet as much money as

you want, but try to throw better than the Chief Thief does.  Make

sure to SAVE YOUR GAME after every game you win, then load your

game when you lose.  When you have finished playing, leave the

guild and leave the inn.  Don't worry, you can return at any time to

play again.

When you’ve had enough of this game, CLIMB LADDER to leave the

Thieves’ Guild.  Now leave the town.

THE DRYAD

From outside the town gates, sneak down twice, and then left 3

times, and you’ll see a white stag.  The stag will run away, so follow it

left.  Keep following it left, until it leads you to the Dryad (you feel as

though the eyes of the forest are watching you).  Sneak left a little

bit, and the Dryad will introduce herself.  She will ask if you are at one

with the woods, so tell her YES.  She will ask if you will give her the

seed of the Spore Spitting Spires (the spitting flowers), so tell her

YES, and give her the seed.  She gives you the recipe for a Dispel

Potion, before returning to her tree.  Look carefully on the ground,

and notice that she left a magic acorn behind.  GET ACORN.

DISPEL POTION

Since the Dryad gave you the recipe for the Dispel Potion, you should

start collecting ingredients for it.  You’re going to need this spell later

on.  Okay, let’s get started.

Magic Acorn:  This is found next to the Dryad’s tree, after you have

given her the seed from the Spitting Flowers.

Fairy Dust:  This can only be found at night time.  You MUST have an

empty flask for this.  Now check the time, and wait until it‘s dark.

From the Dryad’s tree, head right once, and then up once to the

Mushroom Ring.  Look at the fairies dancing around the ring.  Aren’t

they pretty?  Just make sure you don’t go inside the mushroom

circle.  They will ask you to dance, so tell them YES, and then DANCE

for them.  When you have finished dancing, ASK ABOUT FAIRY

DUST, and they will give you some (as long as you have an empty

flask).  Tell them THANKS.

Green Fur:  You can get some green fur from the Meeps.  Meeps are

cute little critters that live in holes under the ground.  Now from the

Mushroom Ring, sneak up once and left twice.  Notice how they keep

popping out of their holes.  Wait for one of the Meeps to pop up, and

then TALK MEEP.  They’ll talk amongst themselves for a while, then

the Green Meep will jump out and talk to you.  ASK ABOUT MEEPS,

ASK ABOUT FUR, ASK ABOUT GREEN FUR.  The Meep will drop

some of his green fur on the ground for you - TAKE FUR, and tell him

THANKS.

Flowers From Erana’s Peace:  Head all the way back up to Erana’s

Peace, and GET FLOWERS.  If it’s getting late, remember to SLEEP

here for the night.

Flying Water:  Again, you need an empty flask for this one.  If you

don’t have any, you can buy some from the Dry Goods shop in town.

Now you can find Flying Water at the Flying Falls, which is found at

the very bottom right of the map.  If you find yourself at the Mirror

Lake, simply sneak up once and right once.  Now there’s a beautiful

waterfall here.  DRINK water to quench your thirst, and then GET

WATER to store some of the flying water in your empty flask.

‘ENRY THE ‘ERMIT

You have all the ingredients for the Dispel Potion now.  But since you

are here, at the Flying Falls, you might as well talk to ‘Enry the ‘Ermit.

Notice the door in the Cliffside.  GET ROCK from the ground, and

THROW ROCK at the door.  Repeat this a few times, until ‘Enry

comes out.  He will reveal a ladder that was hidden in the wall.

CLIMB LADDER, and then KNOCK DOOR.  After knocking on the

door, stand on the right edge of the door, so it doesn’t knock you off

the cliff.

Inside ‘Enry’s cave, ASK ABOUT ENRY, ASK ABOUT CAVE, ASK

ABOUT MAGIC, ASK ABOUT BRIGANDS, ASK ABOUT WARLOCK.

You can’t do anything else here, so leave the cave and CLIMB DOWN

the ladder.

DISPEL POTION AND THE HEALER

You have all the necessary ingredients, but you don’t know how to

make the Dispel Potion.  Never mind, the Healer will make it for you.

Return to the Healer’s Hut, and KNOCK DOOR to enter.  You auto-

matically tell the Healer about the Dryad and the Dispel Potion.  Now

GIVE ACORN, GIVE FAIRY DUST, GIVE FUR, GIVE FLOWERS (repeat

as many times as necessary, until you don’t have any flowers left),

GIVE FLYING WATER, GIVE MUSHROOMS (repeat as many times as

necessary, until you don’t have any mushrooms left).  Now ASK

ABOUT HEALING POTION, and BUY HEALING POTION.  The Healer

will start preparing the Dispel Potion.  Leave the hut, and

immediately KNOCK DOOR to enter again.  The Dispel potion is now

ready, and she will give it to you.

Since you are here, check your Inventory.  You should have at least

100 silver coins at this point.  If not, go back, and fight some more

goblins at the goblin camp.  Now BUY UNDEAD UNGUENT, and then

leave the Healer’s hut.
