QUEST FOR GLORY IV: SHADOWS OF DARKNESS

WALKTHROUGH - THIEF (PART 2)

 

This walkthrough was written by Frodo for The Hero's Glory

 

 

 

 

SWAMP

​

The swamp is still as eerie as it was when you started the game.  

Sneak right, to the Squid Stone. 

 

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  There is some GRUE GOO here - the kind

Dr Cranium was needing.  Use an EMPTY FLASK to collect some of

the GOO.  Actually, you’ll need 4 FLASKS OF GOO - one for Dr

Cranium, and 3 for later in the game.  So collect all 4 now.  Now,

remember the little BONSAI BUSH at the lower-right?  You’re going

to need that bush.  Only problem is, it’s stuck in a pile of rocks.  

Throw your ROPE AND GRAPNEL at the BUSH to dislodge the rocks

(throwing rocks at it won‘t work when you‘re playing as the Thief

character).  This takes a lot of skill, so keep trying.  You won’t succeed

today, but the more you practice, the closer you are to getting the

BUSH.  

 

When you’ve had enough to throwing your ROPE AND GRAPNEL,

sneak left once and up once, so you’re not in the swamp anymore.

FOREST

​

Make your way up 3 times, then right 3 times.  Now up once, and

right once.  You should be at the Leshy bushes now.  

​

​

​


FOREST - LESHY

​

Search the bushes until you find the Leshy.   Now Leshy is very

cryptic.  Think of him as a Riddle-Master.  The first riddle he gives you

is to work out his name.  If you’ve read all the books back at the

Adventurer’s Guild, you’ll know his name is ‘Leshy’, so answer

accordingly.  

​

FOREST

​

From the Leshy bushes, sneak left once, down once, and left once.  

​

​

​


FOREST - GHOST

​

When it’s dark, you’ll see a ghost here (you may have to leave the

screen, then return).  Look at the ghost, talk to her, and work through

all the topics.  Now use Talk Icon on yourself and work through all the

topics.  She doesn’t realise she’s a ghost - she think she’s just lost,

and needs help finding her way back home.  After a while, she

vanishes.  

 

Leave the area, then immediately return.  The ghost has returned.  

Talk to her and work through all the topics.  Before you’re done, she

vanishes again.  

 

Leave the area again, then return.  She’s back.  Talk to her and work

through all the topics.  Use Talk Icon on yourself and Tell About

Ghost.  She gets upset, and vanishes.  

 

Leave, and then return.  There she is!  She’s starting to remember

what happened to her - that she really is a ghost now, and she can’t

go home.   *sniff*   Talk to her and work through all the topics.  She

tells you her name is Anna.  She also mentions her poor Nikolai.  

Nikolai?  The old man in the town?  He’s been searching for his Anna

for so long.   *sniff sniff*   At least you found her for him.

FOREST

​

Well, it’s late now, and you’re tired.  Sneak left once, and up to the

Town Gates.  Katrina is waiting for you at the Town Gates.  Talk to

her and work through all the topics.  Before you’re done, she has to

leave.  She’s VERY mysterious!  

 

Click on the Town Gate and Climb Over Gate.

TOWN

​

Sneak up to the Burgomeister’s office and SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.

Use THIEVES TOOLKIT on the Burgomeister’s window.  If you

succeed in breaking into his office, SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  

​

​


TOWN - BURGOMEISTER’S OFFICE

​

You’re next target is that huge desk, so use THIEVES TOOLKIT on

the desk.  However, the desk is much tougher than the window.  

Keep practising for a while, but don’t stay here for too long, or the

Burgomeister will catch you.  When you’ve had enough of Picking

Locks, leave the office.  

​

TOWN

​

Click on window above the Inn to climb up to your room.  

​

​

​


TOWN - INN

​

Lie down on your bed and Sleep Until Morning.  You have a strange

dream.  

 

Next morning, leave your room and sneak downstairs.  Sit down at

the table to get some breakfast.  After breakfast, leave the Inn.  

​

​

​


TOWN

​

Well, you met Anna’s Ghost last night - you should tell poor Nikolai

about it.  Sneak right once screen.  

 

The old man is still here.  Talk to him and work through the topics.  

Use Talk Icon on yourself and Tell About Ghost Wife, and how you

saw her in the woods.  He immediately leaves to be with her… but

does he really understand that she’s dead?  

 

Enter Dr Cranium’s house on the right.

TOWN - DR CRANIUM’S HOUSE

​

Enter his lab at the back.  He tells you about his wonderful

Rehydration Formula.  Talk to him and work through all the topics.  

Get a HEALING POTION, POISON CURE POTION, and EMPTY FLASK

from him.  When you ask about the Rehydration Formula, you will

have to tell him what the formula is.  Tell him the five-symbol code.  

He also asks for some GRUE GOO.  When conversation is over, give

him FLASK OF GOO.  As promised, he gives you some

REHDRATION SOLUTION.  Now leave his lab and leave his house.

TOWN

​

Sneak up through the arch.  Talk to Igor and work through all the

topics.  Use Talk Icon on yourself and Tell About Dr Cranium.  Now

climb up the Monastery, and enter through the upper window.  

​

​


TOWN - MONASTERY

​

The dehydrated Domovai is still in the cabinet on the left.  Use

REHRDRATION SOLUTION on the Domovai - he’s grateful to you for

dehydrating him.  Climb up to the window to leave the Monastery

again.  

​

​


TOWN

​

Sneak down once.  The Burgomeister tells you that Nikolai has

disappeared from his home, and he fears the old man is dead.  Talk to

the Burgomeister and work through all the topics.  Now use Talk Icon

on yourself and Tell About Old Man.  

 

Sneak down twice, so you are outside the Town Gates, and SAVE

YOUR GAME HERE.

Sneak down as far as you can.  Sneak left once, then down to the

swamp.

SWAMP

​

Sneak right to the Squid Stone and SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Spend

the rest of the day throwing your ROPE AND GRAPNEL at the

BONSAI BUSH.  

 

When it starts to get dark, sneak left once and up once, so you’ve left

the swamp behind.

FOREST

 

Sneak up to the top, then right once, then up to the Town Gates.  

Click on the Town Gates and Climb Over Gate.

TOWN

​

Sneak up to the Inn.  Knock on the Inn door, and enter.  

​

​

​


TOWN - INN

​

The gnome has arrived.  Click on the table to sit down and watch the

comedy show.  After the gnome has finished his comedy routine, talk

to him and work through all the topics.  Now use Talk Icon on yourself

and Introduce Yourself To The Gnome.  Talk to Innkeeper and work

through all the topics.  Talk to the 3 men at the back table and work

through all the topics.  

 

Enter your room at top of the stairs.  Take a clove of GARLIC from the

strands hanging from the ceiling.  Now leave your room again.  

 

The gnome has gone.  Sit down at the table, and your supper will be

brought out to you.  

 

After supper, climb back up the stairs again.  The gnome, Punny

Bones, is staying at room at the end of the hallway.  Click on door and

Knock On Door.  You get an electric shock before entering the

gnome’s room.  

 

In the gnome’s room, talk to him, and work through all the topics.  

You learn how Baba Yaga cursed him and took away his humour.  Use

Talk Icon on yourself and Tell About Yourself.  In a way, it’s YOUR

fault that Puny Bones is cursed.  If Baba wasn’t ‘hopping’ mad, she

wouldn’t have been insulted at Punny Bones‘s jokes.  So the least you

can do is help him get his humour back.  Notice that yellow RUBBER

CHICKEN perched on the corner of his bed - take RUBBER CHICKEN.  

Now leave his room.  

 

Return to your own room.  Click on the bed and Rest For 60 Minutes.  

Keep doing this until ‘You Are Getting Tired’.  This means it’s

midnight.  Leave your room.  

 

The Domovai is here again, perched above the fireplace.  Talk to him

and work through all the topics.  He tells you about all the problems

in Mordavia that need a Hero’s help.   When conversation is over,

return to your room.  

 

Click on your bed and  Sleep Until Morning.  

 

Next morning, leave your room.  Click on Punny Bones’s door, Knock

On Door and enter his room.  Talk to him and work through all the

topics.  When conversation is over, leave his room.  

 

Now climb downstairs, and sit at the table so you can have some

breakfast.  After breakfast, leave the Inn.

TOWN

​

A crowd has gathered outside the Burgomeister’s office.  Talk to the

crowd and work through all the topics - apparently, Igor, the

Gravedigger, has gone missing, and it’s thought that he was eaten by

werewolves.  You also learn that the Innkeeper’s daughter went

missing quite some time ago, and the townspeople think that

werewolves are responsible for that, as well.  The gypsies have been

blamed for everything, and one of them has been brought in for

‘questioning’.  The Burgomeister is trying to make sure that the gypsy

gets a fair hearing, but the crowd is determined that the gypsy

should pay for his crimes.  

 

Enter the Burgomeister’s office.  Talk to him and work through all the

topics.  Use Talk Icon on yourself and Say Gypsy Is Innocent.  The

gypsy is being held in the cell here.  Try to talk to him if you like, but

he won’t say a word.  Looks like it‘s up to you to sort this mess out.  

You want to break the gypsy out of his prison, but you have to wait

until night time before you can do that.  Leave the Burgomiester’s

office.  

 

Sneak down twice, so you are outside the Town Gates, and SAVE

YOUR GAME HERE.

FOREST

Sneak down as far as you can.  Sneak left once, then down to the

swamp.

SWAMP

 

Sneak right to the Squid Stone and SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Spend

FOREST - GHOST

​

This is the place you saw the ghost of Anna.  Now you’ll witness Anna

& Nikolai, finally reunited (you may have to leave the screen, then

return).  What a bitter-sweet moment.   *sniff sniff sniff*  

Leave the screen, then immediately return.  Talk to Anna and work

through all the topics.  Talk to Nikolai and work through all the topics.

He tells you about a secret passage leading into the Borgov Castle.  

He also gives you his HAT.  Now use Talk Icon on yourself, and Say

Goodbye to the ghosts.  

 

Sneak left, and then sneak up to the Town Gates.  Click on the Town

Gates and Climb Over Gate.

TOWN

​

Sneak up to the Burgomeister’s office and SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.

Use your THIEVES TOOLKIT on the window to break into the office.  

​

TOWN - BURGOMEISTER’S OFFICE

​

Talk to gypsy and work through all the topics.  Use Talk Icon on

yourself and work through all the topics.  The gypsy introduces

himself as Davy.  When conversation is over, use THIEVES TOOLKIT

on the desk.  If you’ve been practising enough, you should finally

succeed!  Inside the desk, you’ll find a KEY (for the jail cell) and some

COINS.  Use KEY on the cell to free Davy.  You did a good thing!  He

thanks you, then leaves to go back to his camp.  

 

Leave the office.

TOWN

​

Click on window above the Inn to climb up to your room.  

​

TOWN - INN

​

Lie down on your bed and Sleep Until Morning.  

 

When morning comes, sneak downstairs and sit at the table to get

some breakfast.  After breakfast, stand up and leave the Inn.

TOWN

​

The Burgomeister tells you that the gypsy prisoner has escaped (now

how could that have happened???)  Talk to Burgomeister and work

through all the topics.  

 

Now enter Burgomeistert’s office.  He tells you that Nikolai’s body

has been found.  He will be missed.  Talk to the Burgomeister and

work through all topics.  Use Talk Icon on yourself and Tell About

Anna’s Ghost.  Now leave his office.  

 

Now the question remains… where could Igor be?  Well, he’s a

gravedigger.  Maybe he’s in the graveyard?  

 

Sneak down twice, so you are outside the Town Gates.

Sneak down twice, right twice, then up.  

​

GRAVEYARD

​

So this is Mordavia’s graveyard.  Suitably spooky.  Wait… what’s that

groaning noise?  

 

Look at the fallen headstone and the open grave.  Out of respect, you

should get that headstone standing up again.  Okay, use your HOOK

AND GRAPNEL on tree branch above the headstone to use as a

pulley to haul the headstone up.  Ooooh, there’s Igor!  He was

trapped underneath, and he’s VERY glad to be free.  So much for

gypsy werewolves eating Igor!  Now leave the graveyard.

FOREST

​

You should make sure Igor got home safely.  Sneak left twice, then up

twice to the Town Gates.  

 

Davy is waiting for you outside the Town Gates.  He wants to thanks

you for saving him.  Then he transforms himself into a wolf… and

leaves!  

 

Sneak up into the town.

TOWN

​

The Burgomeister tells you that since you rescued Igor, the werewolf

threat has ended.  Talk to Burgomeister and work through all the

topics.  Now sneak up through arch on the left.  

 

Igor is back in his usual spot.  Talk to him and work through all the

topics.  He gives you KEY to the crypt.  Use Talk Icon on yourself and

Tell About Grave.  

 

Now sneak down 3 times, so you are outside the Town Gates.

Gypsy’s Release.  Now sit down at the table for some supper.  When

Bella, the Innkeeper’s wife appears, talk to her and work through all

the topics.  After supper, sneak up to your room.  

 

Lie down on your bed and Sleep Until Morning.  You are woken

around midnight, by the sound of someone weeping.  Sneak out of

your room.  

 

The weeping is coming from downstairs.  Sneak downstairs, to the

door below the stairs, and Listen At Door.  Yuri & Bella are talking

about Tanya, their missing daughter.  The poor parents are grieving

for Tanya.  Poor Bella & Yuri!  However, it seems there is nothing you

can do for them.  Sneak back up to your room.  

 

Lie back down on your bed again and Sleep Until Morning.  

 

When you wake the next morning, you find a NOTE at bottom of your

bed.  It’s from Katrina, asking you to meet her at the Town Gates

tonight.  Now leave your room and sneak downstairs.  

 

Sit down at the table for some breakfast.  Talk to Bella and work

through all the topics.  Talk to the Innkeeper and work through all the

topics.  When you’re ready, stand up and leave the Inn.

the old man?  Anyway, enter Dr Cranium’s house.

TOWN - DR CRANIUM’S HOUSE

Enter Dr Cranium’s lab.  He’s feeling very proud of his Frankie

creation.  Talk to him and work through all the topics.  Get HEALING

POTION, POISION CURE POTION, and EMPTY FLASK from him.  

When conversation is over, leave the lab and leave his house.

Sneak down twice, so you are outside the Town Gates, and SAVE

YOUR GAME HERE.

​

Sneak down as far as you can.  Sneak left once, then down to the

swamp.

SWAMP

​

Sneak right to the Squid Stone and SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  

 

Spend some time throwing your ROPE AND GRAPNEL at the

BONSAI BUSH.  When your Throwing Skill has reached roughly 270,

and your Strength is roughly 235, you should FINALLY break that rock

pile that was holding the BONSAI BUSH in place!  Phew, that was

really hard work!  The problem now, is that it’s still stuck in all that

goo!  Ahh, but that’s no obstacle for a talented thief like you.  Use

ROPE AND GRAPNEL on the ledge above the BUSH to climb up.  

Now use ROPE AND GRAPNEL on the BONSAI BUSH itself, to hook

it from above.  Now use ROPE AND GRAPNEL on the ledge again, to

climb down.  

 

Now sneak left once and up once, so you’ve left the swamp behind.

FOREST

​

Sneak up 4 times and right 4 times, so you’re back at the Leshy

bushes.  

​

​

​


FOREST - LESHY

​

Search the bushes to find Leshy.  He’ll give you another riddle.  He

talks about ‘saving a plant that’s in a fix’, and ‘save a plant from goo’.  

This can only be the BONSAI BUSH you got from the swamp area.  

Use Talk Icon on yourself, and Tell About Bush In Goo.  He tells you to

plant it in a garden.  But where is the garden?

FOREST

​

Sneak left once, down twice, right once, and up once.  

​

ERANA’S GARDEN

​

You’ve reached Erana’s Garden.  Erana’s spirit watches over the

garden, making it a place of great peace and great safety.  Erana’s

staff rests in the giant boulder in the centre of town.  Look at the

hole in the bottom-right of the garden.  Hmmm, someone has

removed a small bush?  Could it be our BONSAI BUSH?  Okay, place

BONSAI BUSH back in the hole.  Now it’s back where it belongs, it

quickly thrives!  

 

Now, like I said, this is a place of great safety.  Sleep here for a while,

until you’re stamina is at maximum.  If it’s late, you can sleep the

night here.  

 

When you’re ready, sneak down to leave the garden.

FOREST

​

Sneak left once, up twice, and right once, so you’re back at the Leshy

bushes.  

​

​

​


FOREST - LESHY

​

Search the bushes until you find Leshy.  His next riddle is to find out

who’s in the lake.  You’ll know the answer from reading the books

back in the Adventure’s Guild, or by visiting the Lake.  Use Talk Icon

on yourself, and Guess ‘Rusalka’.  

 

Leave the area then return.  His next riddle is about a hidden hut, and

some bushes.  After talking with Punny Bones, you know the answer

is Baba Yaga, so use Talk Icon on yourself and answer accordingly.  

But you still don’t know where to find her.

FOREST

​

Let’s go and pay Davy, the gypsy, a visit.  From the Leshy bushes,

sneak up 3 times, right 2 times, and up to the gypsy camp.  

​

​

​


GYPSY CAMP

​

Davy, the gypsy you saved, welcomes you into his camp, and calls you

‘Gypsy Friend’.  He takes you into Magda’s caravan.  Magda is a

fortune teller.  She gives you an UNDEAD AMULET that will protect

you from evil spirits.  Talk to Magda and work through all the topics.  

Talk to Davy and work through all the topics.  Use your MONEY

POUCH on Magda, to ‘cross her palm with silver’.  She tells your

fortune.  After your fortune, use Talk Icon on yourself and work

through all the topics.  When you Say Goodbye, you spend an

enjoyable evening with the gypsies.  

 

You wake up the next morning, next to the fire pit.  Enter Magda’s

caravan again.  Talk to her and work through all the topics to get

some new information.  Talk to Davy and work through all the topics

again.  Use  MONEY POUCH on Magda again to get another reading.  

Now use Talk Icon on yourself and Greet, Tell About Past, then Say

Goodbye.  

 

This is all you can do in the camp for now, so SAVE YOUR GAME,

then sneak down to leave the camp.

Let’s go and see the Leshy bushes again.  Sneak left twice, and down

3 times.

FOREST - LESHY BUSHES

​

Search the bushes for Leshy.  His next riddle is about a ‘killer bush

with attitude’.  Don’t worry if you don’t know the answer yet - you can

come back later with the answer.  

​

​

​


FOREST

​

Now you know that Baba Yaga’s hut is somewhere to the south-east.  

It’s about time you checked it out.  Sneak right once, down 3 times,

right once, and down twice.  

 

There are some odd-looking bushes here.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  

Change your Walk style to Acrobatics Mode (via the special Toolbar),

and jump over that bush on the left.  Now change back to Sneak

Mode.  

​

BABA YAGA

​

Skulls, a hanging body, a giant pestle and mortar, and… a chicken hut.  

Yup, this is definitely where Baba Yaga is hiding out.  

 

Talk to the skull nearest you - it’s Bonehead, the skull from QFG1!  

Work through all the topics.  Use Talk Icon on yourself and work

through all the topics.  Give him the HAT you got from Nikolai, and he

will let you through to see Baba Yaga.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  

 

Approach the hut.  Hmmm, it doesn’t like you very much, and tries to

get away.  Place CORN on the ground.  The hut comes for the corn,

and sits down.  Now enter the hut.  

 

Baba remembers you, and how you turned her into a frog.  She’s not

very happy about it.  As soon as you’re able, use Talk Icon on yourself

and Tell About Gnome.  Then talk to her and work through the topics.  

She demands that you bring her some ELDERBERRY PIE, then

teleports you back outside her hut.  DON’T enter her hut again, until

you have the PIE.  

 

Sneak up to leave her area.

FOREST

​

Sneak up twice, left all the way to the end, and down once.  SAVE

YOUR GAME HERE.  Hmmm, that bush looks rather strange.  This is

the Elderberry Bush.  You need the ELDERBERRIES from this bush.  

Throw some ROCKS at the bush, to knock a branch loose.  Now place

RUBBER CHICKEN on the ground (yes, really!), and the Bush will

crawl over to play with it.  Now you can safely get the ELDER-

BERRIES from the loose branch.  

 

Check the time, and do what you like until it gets dark.

FOREST - WRAITHS

​

Now that you have the UNDEAD AMULET from Magda, you’re ready

to deal with those nasty Wraiths that only come out at night.  For

simplicity’s sake, I’m going to give you directions starting from the

Elderberry bush.  

 

Sneak up 3 times, to the top.  Check the time, and SAVE YOUR GAME

HERE.  Wait here until it gets dark (you may have to leave the screen,

and re-enter).  As soon as you see the Wraith Mound, rush up to it

and attack.  After you defeat the Wraith, search the mound for some

goodies.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  

 

Sneak left once and down twice.  There’s another Wraith here.  Rush

up to the mound and immediately attack.  Afterwards, search mound

for some goodies.  

 

Sneak up twice, and right all the way to the end.  Rush up to the

mound and attack the Wraith.  After you defeat the Wraith, search

the mound for some goodies.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  

 

Sneak left twice and up to the top.  You know how to deal with the

Wraiths now.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  

 

Sneak down 3 times, left once, and down to the bottom.  This is the

last, and most important Wraith.  Make sure you get the HEART

RITUAL (as well as the other goodies) from the mound.
