KING'S QUEST VIII: MASK OF ETERNITY

WALKTHROUGH PART 2

​

This walkthrough was written by Frodo

for The Daventry Chronicles

 

 

 

THE BARREN REGION

​

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Phew, it’s hot here!  Kill all the fire ants

nearby, and pick up all HEALING CRYSTALS.  Also, kill any lava

monsters.  Check MAP, and start heading left, up the hill.  At top of the

hill, head up, killing 2 more fire ants and taking 2 more HEALING

CRYSTALS.  Now when you get the chance, take path heading left,

killing any lava monsters and fire ants along the way.  Follow narrow

path through the lava until you are attacked by 2 archers.  Kill the

archers, and take all goodies and GOLD that is left behind.  Now there

is a keyhole in the rock here.  Unfortunately, you don’t have the key for

it yet - just remember the keyhole is here.  

​

Now head back the way you came, through the mountain path.  Check

MAP, and start heading upwards towards the sanctuary.  Climb ramp

up into the sanctuary.  Ignore the hillman - he’s not a threat.  Look for

bridge next to the hillman, and cross over it.  Enter the forge in front of

you if you like, but the Hillman isn’t very friendly.  Leave forge when

you’re ready.  Find hillman next door, with the long horn and talk to him

twice to learn about the STONE OF ORDER.  That’s all you can do here

for now, so cross back over the bridge, and leave the sanctuary.  

​

Next to the sanctuary is a hut.  Enter hut to find the Shaman.  Talk to

her - she offers her healing services for 25 GOLD COINS.  Don’t pay her

anything, since you don’t need anyone healed at the moment.  Leave

her hut.  

​

Enter hut opposite - this is the Weapons Shop.  The tradesman tells

you that he can craft a weapon capable of slaying the evil basilisk, but

he needs a BLACK DIAMOND and a STRONG METAL SHAFT in order to

do so.  Leave the Weapons Shop.  

​

Go back left towards the sanctuary, but this time, don’t enter it.  Look

for broken bridge near the sanctuary, and SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.

Some stone blocks will rise up from the lava, and you have to jump on

them in the correct order in order.  Okay, from your position, jump on

the blocks like so:

If you’ve done it correctly, you should have a row of solid metal blocks

acting as a bridge.  Cross over the bridge, and continue upwards.  There

is a group of volcanoes that will spit lava when you get close, so try to

avoid them.  

​

Continue up path, then cross ramp.  Take the FIRE GEM from pedestal -

a spirit will appear and tell you about the fire dwarves, who have

another piece of the Mask.  Useful information!  Turn around, and go

back down the ramp.  

​

Make your way back towards the group of volcanoes, and from here,

follow MAP right, to another broken bridge.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.

 Climb up onto the bridge, and proceed to cross it, killing lava monsters

along the way, and jumping over gaps.  When your ROPE AND HOOK

flash, climb up the wall to an area with 7 gongs.  Step forward onto the

platform, and SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Now, if you shoot any of the

gongs, you’ll see that it shows a colour.  Each gong is a different colour,

and from left to right, the colours are:

Light Blue
Orange
Dark Blue
Red
Green
Purple
Yellow

 


The idea is to shoot the gongs in the correct colour order.  The bridge

will extend as you hit each gong correctly, and collapse again if you hit

the wrong gong\colour.  So arm your CROSSBOW, and shoot the gongs

as so:

After you cross the bridge, take the sacred STONE OF ORDER from the

pedestal.  Now walk back across the bridge, use ROPE AND HOOK to

climb back down the wall, and SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Make your

way back over the broken bridge, jumping over the lava gaps.  

​

Check MAP, and make your way towards the sanctuary at left- middle

of the map.  Find Hillman with the long horn again, and place sacred

STONE OF ORDER on the pedestal next to him.  

​

Now that you have proven yourself trustworthy, the Hillmen are more

willing to talk to you.  Go to the forge next door, and ask the smithy for

a METAL SHAFT - he makes one for you, and gives it to you.  Leave the

sanctuary.  

​

Go back to Weapons Shop in centre of the map and enter it.  Give

BLACK DIAMOND to tradesman, and give METAL SHAFT to trades-

man. Now give him 10 GOLD COINS, and he gives you a powerful PIKE

in return.  This PIKE is strong enough to kill the basilisk.  Talk to the

tradesman to ask about any vulnerabilities the basilisk might have,

and he tells you about a weak spot behind the head.  Now leave the

Weapons Shop.  

​

Check map and make your way down to bottom-middle of the MAP.

When you see the hexagon blocks acting as a bridge on the lava, SAVE

YOUR GAME HERE.  Now remember, there is a weak spot behind the

basilisk’s head, so that should be your point of attack.  Jump onto the

blocks, heading downwards, and SAVING after each successful jump.

 Work your way towards the wall behind the basilisk (not the basilisk

itself), and when your ROPE AND HOOK flash, climb up the wall.  SAVE

YOUR GAME HERE.  Arm your PIKE, and step forward, until you can see

the basilisk below you.  Step forward again, so you automatically jump

onto him and kill him.  

​

Well, you’ve successfully slain the beast, but you’ve lost your PIKE in

the process.  Cross the bridge to reach the temple.  Circle round the

temple, and when your ROPE AND HOOK flash, climb up the wall.  At

top of the temple, walk over to the hole in the floor, and use your ROPE

AND HOOK to climb down into the temple, and note motif on the

walls.  Click on the dead guard twice to get a GRANITE KEY.  Click on

sarcophagus in centre of the room, and take the LONGSWORD.  

Hurray!  You have a weapon again!  Now click on panel in the wall, and

take POTION.  Look at pressure on the sarcophagus, and press them

as so:

If done correctly, a door will slide open, revealing a secret passage.

Enter passage, push panel in wall, and take POTION.  Turn around, and

pick up FULL SUIT OF ARMOUR.  Now exit this room, and climb back

out of the temple.  Return to the dead basilisk, and use your LONG-

SWORD to cut of his tongue.  Pick up BASILISK TONGUE, so you have

proof that you killed it.  

​

Check MAP, and make your way back to bottom-left corner, through

the mountain path.  If you haven’t already done so, kill the 2 archers

now.  There is a keyhole in the wall here, so use your GRANITE KEY in

the keyhole.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE, and follow the newly-revealed

path, killing some archers along the way.  

​

At end of the path, there are 3 panels on wall to your right.  Shoot all 3

panels with your CROSSBOW to extend 3 bridges, and SAVE YOUR

GAME HERE.  Cross the first bridge, to find a blue woman locked in a

jail cell.  Talk to her, then pull lever on the wall to release her and give

her freedom.  She’s very grateful, and unlocks a door for you, before

fleeing.  Make sure you check all 3 cells here, and pick up PIPE CAP from

the top cell.  Now enter through the door that the blue woman opened

for you, and kill the guard.  Take POTION he left behind, and Now there

are 4 symbols on the wall here that may look familiar to you.  Press

them in the following order:

Now a hidden safe is revealed.  Take PIPE CAP from the safe - you

should have 2 now.  Return to area with the 3 bridges, and SAVE YOUR

GAME HERE.  

​

Cross the middle bridge, and open the chest.  You automatically take

the 3rd MASK PIECE, but then you are attacked by another Black

Knight, so kill him, and take the POTIONS he drops.  Return to area

with the 3 bridges.  

​

Cross the last bridge, and take POTIONS from the ground.  Also take

the FIERY FLAMEBOW from the ground.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  

Now follow path through to the next room, and kill the guard.  Take

POTION that he leaves behind.  Notice the pipes on each side of the

elevator.  Place one (just one for now) of your PIPE CAPS on one of the

pipes.  Step into the elevator, turn around, and use your FIERY

FLAMEBOW to shoot panel on the opposite wall.  

​

The elevator takes you up one level.  Take REVEAL POTION, and take

CRYSTAL SCEPTRE from the floor.  Step back into the elevator, and use

your FIERY FLAMEBOW to shoot panel on the opposite wall.  You’ve

gone back down to where you were before.  

​

Take your remaining PIPE CAP, and place it on the other pipe, so both

pipes are covered.  Now step back into the elevator again.  Use your

FIERY FLAMEBOW to shoot panel on the opposite wall.  You are now

taken up to the Frozen Reaches.  

​

​

 


THE FROZEN REACHES

​

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  While the previous land was a lava-filled,

boiling-hot hellhole, this land is the complete opposite - it’s freezing

cold here.  Check your MAP, and head straight down into the ice palace.

Inside, talk to Queen Freesa - she’s the blue woman you rescued in the

Barren Wastelands.  Listen to her sad tale.  She has lost her CRYSTAL

SCEPTRE.  Luckily, you already found it, so give her the CRYSTAL

SCEPTRE.  She lets you keep it, since it allows you to command her

crystal dragon.  Now leave the ice palace.  

​

Check MAP, and start heading left.  You’ll soon hear a voice crying out

for help - a woman has been grabbed by a winged beast.  Kill the

winged beast to free the woman.  There is a Teleport Pad next to him,

but ignore that for now.  

​

Continue left, and kill 4 more winged beasts (2 on the ground, 2 above

entrance to the Guard House).  Enter Guard House, and take on 4 more

winged beasts.  Have a look around if you like, but there is nothing you

can do here.  When you are ready, leave the Guard House.  

​

Return back the way you came, until you reach the portal that brought

you to this region.  Go past the portal, and head right & up, and enter

through doorway, into the crystal dragon’s room.  Look at broken chain

on the round, and look at crystal dragon.  Use CRYSTAL SCEPTRE on

the dragon to wake her up.  She agrees to fly you across the lake, but

you have to open the door first, otherwise she can’t get out.  Notice

there is a large ice block on the ground.  Now look up at the ceiling

(PgUp & PgDn to look Up & Down) to see a broken chain.  Push ice block

so it is underneath the chain.  Now you need to jump up onto the ice

block.  I found this impossible, cos I kept sliding off the other side.  The

way to do it, it use a back flip - stand next to the ice block, but face

away from it, then press Back & Insert.  It will still take a few attempts,

but you’ll get there.  Now, from on top of the ice block, simply click on

the chain to pull it down.  The door finally opens, allowing access to

the lake.  Walk back over to the ice dragon, and use CRYSTAL

SCEPTRE on her again.  She now takes you across the lake.  

​

You now find yourself in another part of the Frozen Reaches.  SAVE

YOUR GAME HERE.  Check MAP, and head left, taking on a gang of ice

orcs.  Keep going left, until you reach a giant cross in the snow.  Click on

the cross, but you can’t understand what it says.  

​

Check MAP, and head up, taking on more ice orcs.  When you reach the

wall, SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Use ROPE AND HOOK to climb the wall.  There is a fierce two-headed dragon chained up at top of the

wall.  You cannot kill it yet, so just climb back down he wall.  Go back down the path, past the giant cross, and stop at the ‘junction’.  

​

Check MAP and head up again, following path going up into the

mountain.  Kill 2 ice orcs standing in front of a tower, then approach

the tower.  Pick up CROSSBOW that one of the orcs dropped.  Find the

door and enter inside the tower.  Shoot all 3 barrels, and pick up all the

goodies.  Now leave the tower.  

​

Check MAP, and head right as far as you can.  Careful not to fall of edge

of the cliff.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Slowly work your way upwards,

until you meet the hoard of snow beasts.  Use your CROSSBOW to

shoot them, backing away as you do so - don’t let them get too close

to you.  When the hoard is dealt with, head up to the very top-right

corner of the map, and SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  As soon as you hear

the snarling, use a red REVEAL POTION to reveal an invisible snow

mane - kill it with your LONGSWORD.  Now walk up into the area, and

click on flaming sword encased in a block of ice.  Use 3 ROCKS on the

ice pond to crack it, and then use FIRE GEM on ice pond to completely

melt it.  Now take the FLAME SWORD, and leave the area.  

​

Head left, and find your way to a tower.  Kill the 2 winged beasts

guarding it, then approach the tower.  Use your ROPE AND HOOK to

climb up the wall, and enter the tower.  Notice trapdoor in the floor.

Exit other side of the tower, and pull lever to open the trapdoor.  

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE, and jump down into the floor below.  Shoot

the 3 barrels and take all the goodies.  Open chest and take more

goodies.  Now pull lever to open the door, and then exit.  SAVE YOUR

GAME HERE.  Straight ahead of you is a sheer drop, but to your left is a

small path - take this path and follow it back to front of the tower.  

​

Check MAP, and work your way left & down, back to the tower at left

of the map.  On right side of this tower is a path leading up into the

mountains - take this path.  Kill 3 more ice orcs and take the goodies

left behind.  Keep following path, killing more ice orcs along the way,

until you reach the castle.  

​

There is 2 ice orcs at front of the castle, so go ahead and kill them, and

take POTIONS.  Now circle around the castle until your ROPE AND

HOOK flash, then climb up the wall.  On the castle roof, walk over to

the grate, and witness the scene below.  

​

Now walk forward to the cells, and talk to the Gryph King.  You may

remember, Queen Freesa asked you to rescue him.  However, there is a

large keyhole next to his cell, but you don’t have the key.  SAVE YOUR

GAME HERE.  Proceed through the exit door, and you’ll see a guard

down below you.  Jump off the platform and kill the guard.  Now take

JAILER’S KEY that the guard dropped in the snow.  Circle castle again,

until your ROPE AND HOOK flash, then climb back up the wall.  Go back

to the cells, and use JAILER’S KEY in the keyhole to release the Gryph

King.  He flies off, back to his flock.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  

​

Head back out the way you came, towards the grate.  A guard will

attack you from above, but you both fall through the grate, and he

lands on a nasty spike.  You now come face-to-face with Thork.  Kill

him with your FLAME SWORD.  Now open chest in corner of the room,

and take the DECIPHERING AMULET.  Take ICE SHARD from opposite

corner of the room.  Now look at gate in the wall, and notice a chest

behind it.  There is a slot in the wall next to it, but no lever to open it.

 Looks like you’ll have to make your own lever.  

​

Walk over to front door and open it.  Notice the wide gap in the

doorway.  Place ICE SHARD in the gap, and use FLAME SWORD on the

ICE SHARD to melt it, then use ICE CROSSBOW to freeze it again.  It

has now become a long, thin ICE ROD.  Pick up ICE ROD, turn around -

might as well pick up that ROCK hidden in the corner, since we’re

here - and walk back to the gate.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Use ICE

ROD in slot next to the gate, and the gate opens.  

​

Watch cutscene as you automatically smash the ice statue, open

chest, and obtain another MAKE PIECE.  But uh-oh… the ice statue

becomes another Black Knight.  Kill him with your FLAME SWORD.  

Now you can’t do any more here for now, so leave the castle.  

​

Now, did the Gryph King get back home safely?  Let’s go and check.

Find your way through the map, back to where the ice dragon is

waiting, at edge of the lake.  Click on her, and she takes you back

across the lake.  

​

Head left, and continue left, until you reach the Guard House.  This

time, the guards don’t attack you.  Enter Guard House, and talk to the

Gryph King.  He gives you a BLUE ADAMENT to show his gratitude for

rescuing him.  Now return to the ice dragon, and ask her to take you

across the lake again.  

​

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Check MAP, and head for tower on the left.

 Now find path to the right of the tower, and follow path up the

mountain, until you reach the castle.  Circle around castle until your

ROPE AND HOOK flash, then climb up the wall.  Walk forward to the

cells.  Now you already rescued the Gryph King from here, but you may

have noticed that strange electric chair opposite the cells.  Place SLICE

OF GOLDEN MUSHROOM, BASALISK TONGUE, and BLUE ADAMENT

in the electric chair.  Pull lever next to the chair.  The spell works it’s

magic, and empowers you with better armour and weapons abilities.

Now head back out, and use ROPE AND HOOK to climb back down the

wall.  

​

Check MAP, and make your way back to cross on the ledge edge of the

map.  Use DECIPHERING AMULET on the cross - ‘Only a blade of fire

can sever the heads of the drake.’  Interesting!  

​

Continue up the path until you reach the wall.  SAVE YOUR GAME

HERE.  

​

DO NOT CLIMB THIS WALL UNTIL YOUR ARMOUR AND WEAPONS

HAVE BEEN UPGRADED VIA THE ELECTRIC CHAIR SPELL.

​

Now when you’re ready, use ROPE AND HOOK to climb up the wall.  

Arm your FLAME SWORD and approach the two-headed dragon.  

When you have a good view of both the dragon necks, attack with your

SWORD, and chop the necks off.  The dragon is slain!  Yippee!  Now

walk past dragon, into back of the chamber.  Drop down into the hole.

Walk forward into the next region.

PARADISE LOST

​

Walk out of the cave, and into the light.  Very pretty place.  Not much

to do here, though.  

​

Check map, and go up to the temple.  Click on small depression inside

the Temple.  Place clear SMALL CRYSTAL PYRAMID into the

depression.  A spirit will congratulate you on your progress so far,

then send you on your way.  Watch the magnificent cutscene.

REALM OF THE SUN: LEVEL 1

 

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  There’s no turning back now!  Walk

forward to the corridor, then down to the bottom, and break the vase.

 Walk to edge of the water and kill the snake monster.  Walk forward

into water and kill another monster.  Now your ROPE AND HOOK will

flash, so climb up the wall.  Break vase, and take MEDALLION.  Climb

back down the wall, leave this water room, and go back to the corridor.

 

Walk up a bit, kill guard, break vase, and take all goodies.  Head left to

end of the corridor, and kill 2 more guards.  

​

Head up, kill 2 snake monsters, break vase, take all goodies.  Follow

path up, kill guard, break vase, and take all goodies.  

​

Now take lower path heading left.  Follow path round and kill snake

monster. Take path heading down and kill another monster.  There’s a

lot of monsters here!  Go down into room, and hear the statues

whispering.  It’s quite spooky here, but these are the guardians you

heard about earlier.  Take TABLET OF KNOWLEDGE from far end

of the room, then leave the room.  

​

Make your way up path on the left, killing monsters on the way, until

you reach the top left corner.  When you see door at the top, you don’t

know the answer to his question yet, so you can’t open the door.  

​

Take corridor leading right, kill guard, and take goodies.  Follow path

right a bit, and when you get the chance, make your way back down to

the bottom.  

​

Take middle path leading up into a room.  Kill all monsters in the room,

and pick up all the goodies.  Nothing else here, so just leave the room.  

​

Return to the corridor, and take path on the right leading up.  Kill all

monsters and take all goodies as you head up.  Work your way towards

top-right edge of the MAP.  There is another locked door here, and a

spirit standing next to it.  Click on spirit, and he will open the door for

you, telling you this is the Hall Of Truth.  

​

Enter through the door, and SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  There are 3

rooms in front of you - this is kind of a ‘3 Trials’ area.  Enter room on

your left, and see a demon floating in mid-air.  Walk towards the

demon - don’t worry about the lack of floor, you won’t fall.  Now the

demon will turn into a KEY, so take KEY OF TRUTH, and SAVE YOUR

GAME HERE.  A path is now revealed, so when you’re ready, leave the

room.  

​

Back in the ‘3 Trials’ area, enter middle door heading up.  There is a

sword here.  Walk towards the sword, and it will turn into a demon.  

Use your FLAME SWORD to kill demon, then leave the room.  

​

Back in the ‘3 Trials’ area, enter room on the right.  There is a golden

sword here, floating in mid-air.  Walk towards it.  Again, don’t worry

about the lack of floor.  However, when you reach the sword, it

disappears.  It was an illusion.  Oh well, just turn around, and leave the

room.  

​

Check the MAP, and make your way down the right edge, until you

get to a locked door.  You already have the key from the ‘3 Trials’ area,

so use KEY OF TRUTH in the door, and then walk through the door

into the room.  Take SWORD AND SHIELD OF  TRUTH, and watch as

your TABLET gets inscribed with something.  When you’re ready,

leave the room.  

​

Make your way back to top-left corner of the MAP.  The door here is

still locked, but use TABLET OF KNOWLEDGE on the door.  Connor

speaks the password and opens the door.  Now walk forward to Level 2.  

​

​

 


REALM OF THE SUN: LEVEL 2

​

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  Wow, look how far you’ve come!  Follow

path up & left, until you reach a locked door on your left.  Now arm

yourself, and kill the 3 guards in front of you.  Continue up & left, killing

all guards along the way.  When you’ve reached that square section

with the vases at the top-left, take upper path heading right.  In the

corner, pull candle on the wall.  Now walk up a bit, to the door, but you

don’t know the answer to his question yet.  

​

Take path heading right, killing all guards along the way.  Make you

way to room at top-right of the MAP.  Egads, this is the vision you had

back in Swamp Land.  This is where those vile creatures are created.

 Time to put a stop to this!  Use MASK OF ETERNITY MEDALLION in

the cauldron to purify it, and it becomes a HEALING POOL where

Connor can drink to replenish his health.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.

When you’re ready, leave the room.  

​

Make your way down the right edge of the MAP, killing more guards,

until you see a spirit guarding another locked door.  Click on spirit, and

he will unlock the Hall Of Light for you.  Enter through this door, into

the room.  Try to read the book on the pedestal, but it’s too dark.  Push

pedestal to middle of the floor, where it’s light, and Connor

automatically reads the book.  Take KEY OF LIGHT that appears.  

When you’re ready, leave the room.  

​

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE, and make your way to centre of the MAP,

that you haven’t explored yet.  There is a locked door here, but you

should already have the key, so use KEY OF LIGHT in the door to

unlock it.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE, then enter the room.  Click on

knight at far end of the room, and watch as your TABLET OF

KNOWLEDGE is inscribed with something.  When you’re ready, leave

the room.  

​

Make your way down again, back towards the entrance.  The door that

was previously locked is now UNlocked.  SAVE YOUR GAME HERE, and

enter the room.  Connor automatically opens chest at far end of the

room, and takes the final MASK PIECE.  Arm yourself, approach the

doorway, and kill the 2 guards.  You now have all the pieces of MASK

OF ETERNITY.  It’s been a long, hard battle, but it’s not over yet.  

​

Return to top-left area of the MAP, where the door asked you a

question.  Use TABLET OF KNOWLEDGE on the door, and Connor will

speak the password.  Walk forward, into Level 3.  

​

REALM OF THE SUN: LEVEL 3

​

SAVE YOUR GAME HERE.  This is it - the final level.  Make your way to

top-middle of the MAP, and find the locked door.  There is a spirit

standing next to the door, so click on him, and he will unlock the Hall Of

Order for you.  Enter the room.  

​

There is a giant puzzle with 9 stone blocks in middle of the floor.  It’s

basically a giant slider puzzle - the aim is to push the 9 blocks around,

recreating a picture of the Mask Of Eternity.  

​

Now this puzzle stumped me!  Theoretically, I know what to do.  But

while pushing the blocks around, I kept finding that I couldn’t push the

blocks any further in the direction I wanted to push them.  And to be

honest, I just found it too tedious after a while.  I hope you have more

luck than I did.  

​
